Many Years Experience
About Barrie Hopwood

I studied Law and Criminology in the 1970s before becoming a Law and Sociology Lecturer in FE. I then trained as a person-centred counsellor and became a student counsellor in the 1980s. In the 1990s I lived in a Franciscan Community in Dorset and returned to Middlesex to set up as a counsellor, supervisor and trainer in private practice.
I was the project manager for Hounslow Youth Counselling Service at Feltham Young Offender Institution and continued to work at the prison counselling violent and vulnerable inmates. I have been a student counsellor at Cranfield University since 2003 where I counsel post-graduate students from all over the world. I supervise groups for Wexham Park Hospital, Hounslow Youth Counselling Service and Windsor and Maidenhead YCS. I facilitate workshops in any areas where I feel I have passion, experience and something to contribute!
In recent years I have been particularly interested in the integration of mind, body and spirit and past, present and future into the experiential/person-centred/humanistic model of counselling which has always underpinned my counselling practice. My training and enthusiasm for EMDR, Focusing, Mindfulness and Inner Child and Soul Work have undoubtedly influenced my practice. I have seen many clients achieve growth, healing and change where they had previously been 'stuck' in a traditional 'talking cure' therapy.
As a male counsellor in a predominantly female profession I am particularly interested in the challenges of working with men and masculinity, especially 'The Little Boy Within'!
